OUR STUDIO
Led by Founding Partners Kate Stuart, Lindsay Mens, and Tommy Smythe, TOM brings together a team of designers, project managers, coordinators, and technical specialists with a shared commitment to thoughtful, highly personal design.
Drawing from this collective, each project is shaped around the client, the home, and the scope of work, with the right team assembled to guide it from concept through completion.
Launched in 2020, TOM has grown to more than twenty team members, with over 400 completed projects across Toronto, Ontario, and North America.
WHAT DEFINES TOM?
INNOVATIVE
We are not a team in the traditional sense of the word, which evokes uniforms and uniformity. We embrace a mosaic made up of individual points of view and strong opinions. Every idea is on the table and all paths are considered. Collaboration is vital, but so is debate.
IRREVERENT
Large-scale design projects can be stressful, expensive and time consuming. We don’t see any value in pretending that isn’t the case, which is why we make even the most painful aspects of the job fun. Everything can be fixed, any problem can be solved, and we won’t leave until it is.
COLLABORATIVE
Our passion for collaboration doesn’t begin and end in the design studio. TOM relies on a huge network of artisans, skilled trades, makers and suppliers. Decades spent learning from and spending time with them has strengthened our ties to the world of design. They are a vital part of our community.
ATTENTIVE
If you’ve hired us, you have our full attention. TOM is not an old-school firm with principals and subordinates. We share responsibility and skill. We are at the site visits, we’re there for the milestones and when it’s time to execute your final installation, we have all boots on the ground.
METICULOUS
We exist to help build and then meticulously execute your vision. When we leave, we’re not gone for good. Follow-up and maintenance is an important aspect of every project. We stand behind the work and are committed to a broad level of client service, so if any adjustments are needed, we’re here.
EQUITABLE
We believe in equality and integrity. We take our role very seriously — you’ve charged us with managing your hard-won financial resources, and we will work within your means and level of comfort. Authenticity, quality and humanity should always inform decisions, selection of objects and the decoration of your environment.
